Cycle Météo pour jazz quartet & orchestre


Le Cycle Météo n’est ni un orchestre symphonique qui joue du jazz, ni du jazz auquel un orchestre a été greffé, mais plutôt des compositions orchestrales qui traitent le quartet de jazz comme un des instruments de l’orchestre. Le compositeur est nourri autant par sa passion de toujours pour le jazz que par son admiration pour les compositeurs orchestraux depuis le 19e siècle.

L’écriture est lyrique, et fondamentalement harmonique, verticale. Ces harmonies émanent d’un vocabulaire jazz, tout comme le format d’écriture qui appartient davantage au jazz qu’aux différentes formes associées à la musique classique; le point de départ n’est pas un motif qu’on développe mais plutôt une mélodie du type 32 mesures / AABA. Cette mélodie inspire ensuite un développement orchestré qui ira de la mise en place à la conclusion.

Son nom « Cycle Météo pour Jazz Quartet et Orchestre » tient lieu de fil conducteur; le projet est constitué de 5 tableaux qui illustrent autant de situations météorologiques dans une succession routinière.

L’oeuvre a été créée le 23 mars 2019 à la Salle Oscar-Peterson de Montréal, avec l’Orchestre symphonique de l’Isle, sous la direction de Cristian Gort.

Un enregistrement avec orchestre a été subventionné par le CALQ mais l'événement a dû être annulé suite à la pandémie. Le projet a été remodelé pour permettre un enregistrement depuis une banque d'échantillonnages symphoniques et ainsi le rendre accessible au public, aux diffuseurs et aux orchestres symphoniques. Des portions du score peuvent être disponibles en demandes privées.

Weather Cycle for Jazz Quartet and Orchestra


The Weather Cycle is not a symphony orchestra playing jazz, nor is it merely jazz laden with orchestral backing. Rather it is a series of orchestral compositions which utilize the jazz quartet as one of the orchestra’s sections in order to further enhance the expressive possibilities.

The composer has a long-standing love of jazz as well as a deep-rooted reverence for 19th century and later orchestral classical music and its composers. The writing is lyrical and principally vertical, harmonic. The harmonies emanate from the jazz vocabulary, as do the structures which are more reflective of jazz and popular music than the different forms associated with classical music. The starting point is not a motif with subsequent multiple sections of development, but more often a 32-bar melody with a standard AABA structure. The melody leads the orchestrated development which will shape the piece from the initial setup through to its conclusion.

The title Weather Cycle for Jazz Quartet and Orchestra is intended as a map; the project comprises five sound image tableaux which depict a normal succession of weather events.

The work was premiered on March 23, 2019 at the Oscar-Peterson Hall in Montreal, with the Orchestre symphonique de l'Isle, conducted by Cristian Gort.

A live recording with orchestra has been granted by CALQ but the event was canceled according to live shows restrictions in the era of covid-19. The project has been renewed so we could still record it with symphonic samples and make it available for public, promoters and orchestras. Portions from the score are available upon private request.
